The Niagara Parks Commission, presenting sponsor, along with The Niagara Falls International Marathon are pleased to announce the school with the most participants in this year’s Schools Marathon Challenge was l’École élémentaire catholique du Sacré-Coeur of Welland, Ontario.Pizza!

With 64 students completing the 2.195 km race from Rapidsview Parking Lot to Table Rock on Sunday, October 24th, Sacré-Coeur broke the winning streak of Mary Ward from Niagara Falls, who has won for the past four years.

To recognize the hard work and training that the students have endured, Pizza Pizza, a major sponsor of the Niagara Parks Schools Marathon Challenge awarded Sacré-Coeur’s marathon participants a pizza party at the school on November 23, 2010.Pizza!

Niagara Parks would like to recognize all students, parents and volunteers for their enthusiastic involvement in the run. This year proved to be another huge success with approximately 1,000 runners from grades 3-8 along with parents and teachers joining the fun. Thanks to everyone’s support, Niagara Parks hopes to grow the event next year, so be sure to tell your friends and relatives and keep training!Pizza!

This program, designed for school aged children supports the mandate for ACTIVE2010 – a comprehensive strategy to increase participation in sport and physical activity throughout Ontario.

On Sunday, October 24, Niagara Parks hosted the Niagara Falls International Marathon, which saw over 6,000 runners cross the finish line at Table Rock.

The 6th Annual Schools Marathon Challenge is one of the races that took place Sunday.

The Schools Marathon Challenge is open to elementary school children from grads 3-8 and is designed to help children become physically fit through the sport of running. The program is of no cost to schools and fits in with the Ontario Physical Education curriculum. This program also supports the mandate for ACTIVE2010 – a comprehensive strategy to increase participation in sport

and physical activity throughout Ontario.

Each student is required to complete a combined total of 40 kilometres from the start of the school in September to the day prior to the running of the Niagara Falls International Marathon. Students complete running log books to record the date and distance run, and it must be verified by their phys ed teacher, principal or parent/guardian.

Participants get to cross the official finish line on race day, a distance of 2.195 km to complete the marathon distance of 42.195 kilometres. Upon completion of the marathon, each runner received a finisher's medal, T-shirt and a goody bag loaded with free samples and coupons.

With 80 students completing the 2.195 km race from Rapidsview Parking Lot to Table Rock on Sunday, October 25th, 2009, Mary Ward takes home the crown as winner for the fourth year in a row.
